Introduction

Many in the library world are concerned about the shortage of new librarians entering the field. Lack of new librarians with specialized subject and language knowledge has become a major problem. Academic libraries in particular need staff with subject and language expertise to select and catalog materials. Scholar-librarians are an essential part of the education and research process: they teach research methods courses and work closely with faculty to facilitate their research. The WESS Recruitment to the Profession Committee seeks to address this need by encouraging graduate students and recent Ph.D.s to consider a library career. Graduate training in classics, English, French, German, history, art history, and similar fields is a great foundation for library work. We also encourage undergraduates majoring in languages and related fields to explore librarianship as well. While WESS focuses primarily on the languages, history, and culture of Western Europe, the Committee hopes to collaborate with ACRL colleagues in other areas (e.g., SEES and LES) in these efforts.

In addition to this website, we plan an active outreach program to graduate departments and to professional societies, such as the AHA, APA, and MLA. We have created this toolkit to support outreach efforts. Its contents include model flyers, posters, presentations outlines, and links to web resources on careers in librarianship. There is also a list of librarians with subject expertise who are willing to share their experiences and offer advice.

If you use these tool kits to give a presentation, please let us know how it goes and how we might improve this resource. A current list of members of the WESS Recruitment to the Profession Committee can be found at: http://wessweb.info/index.php/WESS_Recruitment_to_the_Profession_Committee#Current_Committee_Members.
