WESS Scandinavian Discussion Group meeting
2015 Midwinter ALA Conference, Chicago, Illinois

Saturday, January 30, 1:00-2:30 PM
SHER Colorado Room

"Wi lever och har hälsan"

By 1910, one-fifth of all people who were born in Sweden lived in the United States, a proportion exceeded only by the Irish and the Norwegians (source: The Electronic Encyclopedia of Chicago 2005 [1]) The language and cultural life of Scandinavian-Americans was highly developed in the 19th century and is documented in a rich variety of publications.

The WESS Scandinavian Discussion Group will focus on libraries and archives in Illinois and Wisconsin that have unique and significant Scandinavian holdings and special collections of publications by Scandinavian-Americans in North America.

Our discussants are:

Anna-Kajsa Anderson, Director of Archives and Special Collections, North Park University (Chicago)

Paula Mae Carns, Head of the Literatures and Languages Library, University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign)

Lisa Huntsha, Archivist/Librarian, Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center, Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois)

Jill Seaholm, Head of Genealogical Services, Swenson Swedish Immigration Research Center

Todd Michelson-Ambelang, Scandinavian Humanities and Classics Librarian, University of Wisconsin (Madison)

Each will give a five-ten minute overview of her/his library's noteworthy Scandinaviana, and then the discussion will be open to questions and comments from all attendees.

The Convener hopes that this discussion will lead to greater communication among Scandinavian-studies librarians and perhaps a publication documenting these special collections and archives.
