Beaumarchais, Jean-Pierre de; Couty, Daniel; Rey, Alain. Dictionnaire des écrivains de langue française. Paris: Larousse, 2001. 2 v. (2253 p.); 25 cm. Contents: v. 1. A-L -- v. 2. M-Z. ISBN 2035051983 (set): € 80.04; 525.03 FF.

Abridged edition (revised and updated) of the 1984 and 1994 editions of the Dictionnaire des littératures de langue française [Balay BE1149; Walford 7th ed., v. 3/#8067]. The more than 1000 signed articles cover movements and anonymous or collective works as well as personal authors. Lacking are the brief bibliographies at the ends of articles that preceding editions included. In appendix are chronological lists of occupants of each chair in the Académie française and the Académie Goncourt, French winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature, and winners of 6 major French prizes, and an index of titles. [JKL]

Mi<Bibliographie des écrivains français/Bibliographica</i> (ISSN 1245-2505) Paris; Roma: Memini. 23: Couzinet, Marie-Dominique. Jean Bodin. 2001. 363 p.; 24 cm. ISBN 888660937x: € 64.00. 24: Beugnot, Bernard. Guez de Balzac. c2001. 261 p.; 24 cm. ISBN 8886609361: € 52.00

Two more installments in a series of classed annotated bibliographies on French literary authors whose first number was noted in our Spring 1996 issue (see also our Spring 2000 and Fall 2001 issues). Includes indices of keywords, outstanding studies, theses, authors of book reviews, and authors and translators. These numbers also appear without the electronic copy on floppy disk that accompanied the early numbers; the series editors indicate that the entire series will be available online and on CD-ROM, but offer no details. This series is being critically reviewed in IFB, hence in IFBA and RRE. [JKL]

Dictionnaire d’analyse du discours. Ed. Patrick Charaudeau, Dominique Maingueneau. Paris: Éditions du Seuil, 2002. 661 p.; 22 cm. ISBN 2020378450: € 30.

A specialized lexicon of the field overlapping the study of language and literature, which the editors’ homonymic entry indicates has been the object of “very varied” definitions. The signed scholarly articles focus on French usage, but indicate that of other cultures as well, with references to the 54-page bibliography. Includes extensive see and see-also references, as well a classed list of entries. [JKL]

This massive reference work aims at comprehensive coverage of the so-called French or First Indochina War. With virtually no restrictions on the type of material included, the work can claim exhaustive coverage of books in major languages, less complete inclusion of journal literature, and only partial coverage of the vast material from news media and political debate. The bibliography comprises the bulk of the work; extensive annotations often include lengthy quotes. Thirteen appendices include: a chronology, thumbnail biographies, tables of public opinion polls, French governments, parliamentary debates, lists of French civil and military officials in Indochina; statistics on French troops deployed in Indochina, the war and the French economy, and on American aid; as well as facts about allied states in Indochina and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Three detailed indexes cover personal names, places, and subjects. [SFR]

Ehmann, Hermann. Voll konkret: das neueste Lexikon der Jugendsprache. Beck’sche Reihe, 1406. München: Beck, 2001. 159 pp. ISBN 3406459463. € 7.50

The author, of Affengeil (1992) and Oberaffengeil (1996) fame, has now rounded out the study of German youth slang with Voll konkret, a decade after the publication of his dissertation Jugendsprache und Dialektik: Regionalismen im Sprachgebrauch von Jugendlichen (Opladen: Westdeutscher Verlag, 1990). Based on years of teaching at the Gymnasium, research and incognito “field studies,” Ehmann’s book presents a fascinating challenge to the student of German. As the author points out, such a dictionary is ipso facto incomplete. From “abcoolen” to “zuschottern,” each entry contains a definition of the term, makes ample use of cross-references to other terms within the volume, and ends with an example of usage. [RLK]

Engelhardt, Dietrich von, ed. Biographische Enzyklopädie deutschsprachiger Mediziner. München: Saur, 2002. 2 vols. (992 pp.). ISBN 3598114621. € 258

Hollmer, Heide, and Albert Meier, eds. Dramenlexikon des 18. Jahrhunderts / unter Mitarbeit von Lars Korten und Thorsten Kruse. München: Beck, 2001. 350 pp. ISBN 3406474519. € 34.90

The editors seek to go beyond the established canon of German-language drama of the 18th century by including little-known plays alongside those of Lessing, Goethe, Schiller et al., thereby offering a richer reflection of the actual German-speaking theater scene at the time. The criteria for inclusion were significance for the contemporary theater by way of popularity and/or originality. Alphabetically arranged by playwright and play, the book contains individual, signed articles on the dramas. In addition to date of publication, the date and place of premier performance, if known, is indicated. A short synopsis and interpretation of the work follows, concluding with a bibliographic source citation. Includes an index of plays. [RLK]

Lödige, Hartwig. Tesa, Tuc und Teddybär: das große Lexikon der rätselhaften Wörter. München: Ullstein, 2001. 352 pp. ISBN 3550071574. € 15.00

While this dictionary includes many relatively recent foreign terms (Q-tips, Nescaf?, Spice Girls, etc.), it also contains long-standing German vocabulary whose etymology and background are not readily known (e.g., Mercedes, Sauerstoff, Sachertorte, etc.). The entries vary greatly in length and are in the form of leisurely, informative discussion rather than traditional dictionary formulation. [RLK]

Lorenz, Matthias N. Martin Walser in Kritik und Forschung: eine Bibliographie. Bibliographien zur deutschen Literaturgeschichte, Bd. 11. Bielefeld: Aisthesis, 2002. 258 pp. ISBN 3895283541. € 42

Published on the occasion of his 75th birthday, this is the first comprehensive, thematically organized secondary bibliography of Walser. Lorenz defers to the volumes of the Martin-Walser-Gesamtausgabe (Suhrkamp, 1997) for a compilation of primary source references. The volume is organized into the following categories: general approaches (biographies, general studies, essays, etc.); thematic concentrations (e.g. concept of identity, Walser as satirist, etc.); studies of his works (by genre/period or by individual title); relationship/approach to prominent figures (Kafka, Kierkegaard, etc.); fictional characters; peace prize and Walser-Bubis debate. The latter category encompasses selectively citations to newpapers and weeklies.[RLK]

Michael, Robert and Karin Doerr. Nazi-Deutsch/Nazi German: an English Lexicon of the Language of the Third Reich. Westport, CT: Greenwood, 2002. 480 pp. ISBN 031332106X. $65.33

Concise definitions of the whole array of words, phrases, acronyms, governmental and military ranks/offices, etc. encompassing the Nazi ideological world view. The historical context is elucidated in forewords by Paul Rose, Leslie Morris and Wolfgang Mieder; and in the authors’ essays “The Tradition of Anti-Jewish Language” (Michael) and “Nazi-Deutsch: an Ideological Language of Exclusion, Domination, and Annihilation” (Doerr). An appendix contains an assortment of Nazi-related information: major concentration camps and ghettos by country; military ranks; SS divisions; concentration camp prison badge colors and corresponding prisoner categories; lyrics to Nazi songs in German with accompanying English translation; Nazi party platform; loyalty oath; names of months with corresponding Nazi Germanic names; and 1936 children’s prayers. Includes bibliography divided into German and English works, in addition to the extensive referencing within the two essays. [RLK]

Münster, Reinhold. Friedrich von Hagedorn: Personalbibliographie: mit einem Forschungsbericht und einer Biographie des Dichters. Würzburg: Königshausen & Neumann, 2001. 126 pp. ISBN 3826020995. € 25.00

Publication of this bibliography corresponds to a recent reassessment of the Hamburg poet’s contribution and place within the German Aufklärung, in particular its optimistic side expressed in literary rococo and anacreontic poetry. Following upon a research report and a tabular biographical outline, the bibliography is organized into multiple sections that provide coverage of primary works and editions, correspondence, archival holdings, musical settings of the poems; and, within the secondary literature, biographies, bibliographies, reference works, general studies, genre-based studies and topical approaches. This should not imply that the secondary entries are all—or even mainly—focusing on Hagedorn as the main subject. Generally the poet is discussed within a larger literary or historical context. However, that does not detract from the appeal of Münster’s work, which leads the reader to much interesting research on the literary and intellectual facets of the Enlightenment in Germany. [RLK]

Paul, Hermann. Deutsches Wörterbuch: Bedeutungsgeschichte und Aufbau unseres Wortschatzes. 10., überarbeitete und erw. Aufl. / von Helmut Henne, Heidrun Kämper, Georg Objartel. Tübingen: Niemeyer, 2002. 1243 pp. ISBN 3484730579. € 56

Since its first publication in 1897, the “Paul” has become the German etymological dictionary with the most printings, and the last edition was published ten years ago. The authors of the current edition emphasize that this dictionary goes beyond the scope of other etymological dictionaries through the inclusion of a thematic/conceptual heading index (first introduced in the 9th ed.) which fulfills a collocating function, directing the user to myriad entries within the alphabetical dictionary proper. An example is the term “jiddisch,” which contains not only cross references to entries for “Hebräisch” and “Rotwelsch” found within the index, but also a list of words within the dictionary with Yiddish origins. The dictionary entries are ample, with etymology, historical and current meanings, and are replete with examples of literary examples. All word entries and variations are in bold for viewing ease. Includes bibliographies of sources cited at least three times and secondary philological works. [RLK]

Redenbacher, Fritz. Platen-Bibliographie. 3., überarbeitete und erw. Ausg. / im Auftrag der Universitätsbibliothek Erlangen-Nürnberg herausgegeben von Beate Gresser, unter Mitarbeit von Herbert Hirschfelder. Hildesheim; New York: Olms, 2001. 223 pp. ISBN 3487113481.

Originally published in 1936 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Platen’s death and re-issued in 1972 as an expanded 2nd ed. with coverage through 1970, Redenbacher’s work has now been brought up to date by Gresser and Hirschfelder. With coverage through 1999, the current work has grown from 1,135 titles in 1972 to 1,683. Includes primary and secondary works, as well as musical settings of Platen’s poetry and studies thereof. Name index provided. [RLK]

Schemann, Hans. PONS deutsche Redensarten. 1. Aufl. Stuttgart: Klett, 2000. 311 pp. ISBN 3125177715. € 15.90

An abridgement of Schemann’s Deutsche Idiomatik: die deutschen Redewendungen im Kontext (1. Aufl. Stuttgart: Klett, 1993). In addition to the “parent” volume’s depth (1,037 pp.), the present compact version also lacks the 43-page bibliography. “Definitions” are provided by means of examples of the idiom used in sentences, in which the meaning clearly emerges. Will not satisfy many idiom queries because of its brevity. [RLK]

Schülerduden. Bedeutungswörterbuch: Wortbildung und Wortschatz. 3., völlig neu bearbeitete Aufl. Mannheim: Dudenverlag, 2000. 491 pp., illus. ISBN 341105963X. € 16.90

This German-German dictionary is oriented toward the student, whether native or non-native. Includes not only definitions but also synonyms, compound forms and examples of usage in sentences. Selective illustrations add to the appeal of this slim but handy volume. [RLK]
