First, I would like to thank everyone who helped make Midwinter a great conference!

While we were at ALA Midwinter, the ACRL Board voted to approve a merger between WESS and the Slavic and East European Studies Section (SEES). The groups will be officially merged beginning September 1, 2017, and named the European Studies Section (ESS). We have been working very closely with SEES leadership to create governance procedures and a transition plan.

I know many of you will have questions about what the future holds for the new European Studies Section. Many of your questions can be answered in these documents (a merger FAQ, the transition plan, and governance documents).

If you have additional questions, please contact myself ( or Kristen Totleben, incoming co-chair (

WESS members have also been working with CRL to plan “New Directions for Libraries, Scholars, and Partnerships: An International Symposium” in conjunction with the Frankfurt Book Fair. More information can be found on the Symposium Website.

And, finally, do you plan to attend ALA Annual? Tickets for our Sunday event social event, a dinner cruise up the Chicago River and out on to Lake Michigan, are now available for $35. Full information and the ticket ordering form are available on EventBrite.
