These last few months between Midwinter and Annual have flown by, with planning continuing for the 3d International (somehow that always sounds a little odd to me) Conference, tentatively set for Spain in 2010. Adan has been working hard to ensure the promised funding and will soon begin to contact interested WESSies about program planning. The program will be “location neutral,” with translation provided and we hope to draw librarians from the whole of Europe. Please contact Adan (griego@stanford.edu) with ideas – and plan to attend the next planning meeting in Anaheim.
Not to be missed in Anaheim (really, how could one miss any WESS event?) is the program on Monday: “Cooperative Strategies for European Libraries: Access and Preservation” Ten years after Kurt de Belder spoke at the WESS program in Washington, DC, he returns to speak to a very similar subject whose importance has only grown in the last decade. I would like to take this chance to thank the Program 2008 Committee and our sponsors for their substantial gifts that enable these three speakers to cross the wide Atlantic & wide-open spaces to address us.
Our land-locked cruise will be the social event of the season, and I look forward to seeing everyone there. Thanks are due to the Membership Committee and generous sponsors for creating another marvelous opportunity to spend time talking with fellow WESSies.
Three librarians who have been stalwart supporters of WESS—and indeed all took a turn as WESS Chair in addition to playing many other roles—are retiring this year. On behalf of WESS I would be remiss not to recognize the immense efforts and important contributions of Charlie Fineman (WESS Chair 1982-83), Stephen Lehmann (WESS Chair 1998-99) and Barbara Walden (WESS Chair 2001-02). WESS must express its deep gratitude for their leadership.
See you in Anaheim!
