- 1. Topics in European Studies
- Three papers in the series Topics in European Studies were presented: “Russian Federation Academic Libraries and Infrastructure,” by Liladhar Pendse, “The Suppressed First Edition of Margaret of Navarre’s Heptameron,” by Christopher Walker, and “Foreign Languages and Academic Librarianship,” by Brian Vetruba and Laura Dale Bischof. The third of these papers presented preliminary results of a survey conducted in 2007 by a subcommittee of the WESS Recruitment to the Profession Committee.
- 2. Committee business
- a. Planning for annual conference
- The committee agreed that another session of “Topics in European Studies” should be held at the Annual Conference in Anaheim. The chair will issue a call for papers.
- b. 2010 action plan assessment
- Sarah How reported that the action plan she had submitted for the 2010 fiscal year had been approved, contingent upon WESS holding the planned international conference in Madrid in the spring of 2010. The action plan would provide funding to help librarians in the early stages of their careers to attend the conference. An element of the action plan was an outcomes-based assessment to be conducted following the Madrid conference. The task of designing and conducting the assessment (in the form of a survey) would be delegated to the Research and Planning Committee. However, at the time of this meeting, it appeared unlikely that the conference could take place as planned. [It was later confirmed that the conference will almost certainly not be held in 2010.] In any case, should WESS hold a conference in Europe in the future, and should a similar action plan be developed for that conference, it is likely that the task of assessment will be delegated to the Research and Planning Committee.
- c. Development of future action plans
- Because ACRL requires action plans (proposals for special funding for activities closely tied to strategic objectives of the divisional strategic plan) to be submitted by an incoming vice-chair/chair-elect by early August following the ALA election, there is very little time for the new officer to develop such a plan. It was therefore suggested that the Research and Planning Committee could develop one or more such proposals for the incoming vice-chair/chair elect to consider. The committee agreed to take this on as a recurring task. Ideally, the incoming vice-chair would have these proposals available shortly after his or her election in May. This means that the committee should begin discussing potential action plans at the Midwinter Conference, and should continue discussion by e-mail from February through May in order to have proposals available by May
- Respectfully submitted
