- 1. Topics in European Studies
- One paper was presented in the series Topics in European Studies: “Kristina of Sweden and 17th Century European Reading,” by Mara M.J. Egherman. A copy of the paper will be posted on WESSWeb.
- 2. Committee business
- a. ACRL Action Plans
- During the weeks preceding the annual conference, a subgroup consisting of Shipe, Tabb, and Wool discussed possible projects that might be suitable for an ACRL Action Plan which the incoming Vice-Chair/Chair-Elect could consider for submission. Two ideas emerged from this group and were discussed with Brian Vetruba prior to the conference. The first was to resubmit Sarah How’s successful application that would have provided financial support to allow early career librarians to attend the next WESS International Conference; ACRL had approved the plan contingent on the conference being held in Spring 2010. Since it now appears that any international conference will take place after Vetruba’s term as Chair, the committee agreed not to pursue this proposal for 2010/11. The second idea was to provide funding for early career librarians and/or library science students, especially from underrepresented minorities, to attend an ALA Midwinter Meeting or Annual Conference, with emphasis on WESS and other ACRL sessions. WESS would provide mentors for successful applicants to help orient them to WESS and ACRL and to assist them in navigating the conference. The committee and Vetruba (who was present at the meeting) agreed that this second idea should be developed for submission to ACRL as an Action Plan to ACRL. Shipe, Tabb, Vetruba, and Wool planned to meet immediately following the committee meeting to refine the proposal.
- b. Book Fair Attendance Coordination
- Tabb agreed to take primary responsibility for maintaining the book fair section of WESSWeb. Landor, who had been serving this function, offered to assist in the transition.
- c. Committee Web Pages
- Shipe asked for assistance in adding a section to the committee’s website that would list all of the “Topics in European Studies” presentations since 2006, with links to the content of the presentations whenever possible. He may solicit assistance from some of the committee members who were unable to attend this meeting.
- d. Committee Charge
- Since bylaws have been replaced by governance procedures, committee charges no longer have an official location on WESSWeb. The Research and Planning Committee’s charge as it appeared in the former bylaws is outdated in several respects. The committee expects to be reviewing its charge over the next year.
- Respectfully submitted
- Timothy Shipe, chair
