ACRL Western European Studies Section, Research and Planning Committee
Saturday, 12 January 2008, 4:00-6:00 P.M.
Sofitel Dijon Room, Philadelphia

Minutes

1. Topics in European Studies
Louis Reith presented a paper in the series Topics in European Studies: “’My Dear Dark Dove’: Leoš Janáček’s Correspondence with Kamila Stösslová as Inspiration for Later Musical Masterpieces,” by Louis Reith. A copy of the paper will be posted on WESS-WIKI. The chair will compile a list of all previous contributions to this series, with abstracts, full texts, or links to published versions whenever possible, and will add these to WESS-WIKI as well.

2. Committee business
a. Book fair attendance coordination
At the request of Sarah Wenzel, the committee discussed taking on some responsibility for the section’s involvement in European book fairs. The committee agreed (1) to maintain the book fairs section of the WESS Wiki, (2) to coordinate section members’ attendance at book fairs by sending out inquiries on WESS-L to determine who plans to attend particular events, and (3) when possible, to appoint a quasi-official representative of WESS to specific book fairs; the main function of such representatives would be to provide information about WESS and ACRL to fair attendees.
b. Planning for annual conference
The committee agreed that another session of “Topics in European Studies” should be held at the Annual Conference in Anaheim. The chair will issue a call for papers.

3. Editing in the WESS-WIKI
The second hour was a joint meeting with the Social Sciences and History Discussion Group and the Classical, Medieval and Renaissance Discussion Group. Dick Hacken demonstrated basic techniques for editing in the WESS-WIKI.

Respectfully submitted
Timothy Shipe, chair
