- 1. Topics in European Studies
- Two papers were presented in the series Topics in European Studies: “After the Deluge: Long-Term Responses to Library Disasters with Some Lessons for the Future,” by Mark Peterson, and “Madmen, Hypocrites, and Degenerates: Readers and Their Books in the Late-Eighteenth-Century German Novel,” by Kathleen Smith. A third paper that had been scheduled was cancelled at the request of the presenter. Copies of the two papers will be posted on WESS-WIKI.
- 2. Committee business
- a. Book fair attendance coordination
- Approximately eight WESS members plan to attend the 2008 Frankfurter Buchmesse. The committee appointed Beau Case as WESS representative to the fair, with Heidi Madden as alternate.
- b. Planning for annual conference
- The committee agreed that another session of “Topics in European Studies” should be held at the Midwinter Meeting in Denver. The chair will issue a call for papers.
- c. Travel support document
- At the request of the WESS Chair, the committee approved a minor change in the wording of the document “Professional Development and Western European Travel” that had been drafted by the Hank Harken, approved (with revisions) by the committee at the 2007 Annual Conference, and approved with further revisions by the WESS Executive Committee with further revisions. The final change is the deletion of the phrase “and have less access to institutional funding” under the heading “criteria for individual awards.”
- Respectfully submitted
- Timothy Shipe, chair
